Roman Intaglio ring carved Carnelian on 22ct gold and silver shank
£2,000.00
A unique Roman Intaglio ring with a beautiful woman’s face carved on a Carnelian stone and mounted on 22ct gold with silver accents. We cleaned the ring fully but intentionally didn’t polish the shank to preserve it’s authenticity. There are some wear around the bezel expected with a piece of this age. We cannot trace it’s actual date but the style of the carving is associated with roman times where faces had very strong roman features compared to neoclassic revival carving. It is rare to find a 22ct mounted intaglio. The ring is size Q and doesn’t have a hallmark but has been tested at 22ct with silver small accents details to support the setting either side of the shank.

A little bit about intaglio:
Antique Roman carnelian intaglio. An intaglio is a small gemstone, usually semi-precious, that has been carved with images or inscriptions only on one face, leaving a hollow impression in the untouched background. This style of carving is the opposite of the cameo technique.
Hot wax does not stick to carnelian, making it a popular choice for signet rings for the ancient Greek and Romans. Carnelian has also been used for intaglio (printmaking), whereby an image is carved into a surface (of the carnelian) and the incised line or sunken area holds the ink.
